MANILA, Philippines—When noted sculptor Ramon Orlina decided to produce a musical on the miraculous Virgin of Caysasay three years ago, he chose only the best theater artists for the significant religious production: Scriptwriter-director Nestor Torre, composer Ryan Cayabyab, and top singers, Ogie Alcasid and Cocoy Laurel.
His determination to come up with the best and most memorable show sprang from his personal faith in the Virgin's intercession, and from the fact that she is the patroness of his hometown, Taal, Batangas.
Triumphant tour
The musical was presented to great acclaim at the CCP and was subsequently taken on a similarly triumphant tour. Ironically, however, it has never been performed in Taal, where its story took place centuries ago. So, Orlina has been working hard to overcome all sorts of obstacles for many months—and he has finally succeeded: On Oct. 25, “Mapaghimalang Birhen ng Caysasay” will have two special performances, at 3 and 7 p.m., at the Taal Covered Court Gymnasium in Taal, Batangas. Major sponsor is SM Supermalls.
The much-anticipated musical presentation is expected to be an inspiring and even emotional experience for many Taaleños, because of their strong personal link to the Virgin of Caysasay. The loving relationship has been intensified through the years and centuries by the many healings and other graces attributed to the intercession of the Birhen.
Doubly special
Making the Taal performances doubly special is the fact that Ogie Alcasid has rearranged his very busy performing schedule to enable him to once again play the pivotal role of Hay Bing in the musical, three years after he first performed it at the CCP. Ogie feels strongly about the musical, because his parents come from Taal, and are fervent devotees of the Birhen. Playing other important roles in the October restaging of “Mapaghimalang Birhen ng Caysasay” are some of the musical theater worldʼs finest artists, like Tommy Abuel, Lou Veloso, Rito Asilo, Andy Bais, Nicole David, Sheila Assuncion and Mica.
